THE EDITORIAL
At the new year that presented itself to the world, humanity reached out wounded and tired, but more than ever it fought to eradicate the pandemic. In this dramatic period, science has proved to be the only possible weapon to defeat the virus. It is also for this reason, to face the challenges of economic regrowth that Europe and Italy have decided to invest heavily in research and innovation in the Recovery Plan and NextGenerationEU. It is the right challenge to face: improving our knowledge to generate a more equitable, more resilient society, to improve the quality of life, even in a different relationship with the environment.
L'GUEST OF HONOR
The assessment of volcanic risk in prevention: interview with Pierfrancesco Dellino, scientist of the National Major Risks Commission
What is the primary intervention for a better understanding of man-made volcanoes? We asked Professor Pierfrancesco Dellino, professor of Geochemistry and Volcanology at the University of Bari and member of the CGR for volcanic risk. Guest of honor of the month, Professor Dellino underlined the strategic importance of communication which, in his opinion, must be clear, unambiguous and "humble".

INTERVIEW A
He loves his land, spending an evening looking at the stars and being with his family. Initially shy of her, she met a Professor in her life who believed in her, giving her the necessary strength to achieve important goals. She's a disaster in the kitchen but luckily she has a husband who takes care of her. Etna is her love at first sight and she relaxes listening to Ennio Morricone. Today we tell you about Simona Scollo, a really smart girl, a volcanologist who has made her research her passion... of her life.
LAB EXPERIENCES
The Development Laboratory for Radiofrequency Technologies
From the study of the ionosphere to the analysis of Antarctica's glaciers, passing through the acquisition of electromagnetic signals forlistening of planet Earth: the work and activities of the INGV Radiofrequency Technologies Development Laboratory cover a vast range of fields of application in the Geosciences. We talked about it with Umberto Sciacca, supervisor of the Lab-RF, to let us tell the story of his laboratory and learn more about the studies and research that are carried out within it.
THE EARTH TELLS
Earthquakes in Sardinia, a rare but possible phenomenon
It is commonly believed that Sardinia is the only non-seismic region in Italy… is that really the case? We asked Carlo Meletti, Director of the Pisa Section of INGV who was in charge of the research “The historical seismicity of the island without earthquakes”, recently published in the Quaderni di Geofisica. In this interview Meletti retraces the seismic events that have characterized the island in recent centuries, guiding us to discover the signs they have left.
IT HAPPENED TODAY
MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP
QUEST, the INGV team for the study of damage from strong earthquakes
An intense, meticulous work of great emotional impact. It is that of QUEST, the INGV Operational Group which, in the event of strong earthquakes, reaches the most affected areas to collect data, document and carry out damage estimates, with the aim of scientifically rigorous evaluation of the visible effects that seismic events have on urban fabrics and communities. A job that keeps the scientist and the man behind him busy, which takes place in the rubble and who arrives to try to put 'order' where chaos is the absolute protagonist. We interviewed Andrea Tertulliani, historical coordinator of QUEST, to get to know his Operational Group and better understand how campaigns are carried out, even the most emotionally demanding ones.
