Speech by the President of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Prof. Carlo Doglioni, at the ceremony for the 29th anniversary of INGV 9/1-10/2019 XNUMX
It is an Institute that apparently only passed the high school diploma two years ago but which, in reality, has its roots in the 800s when the Vesuvius Observatory and the Etna Observatory were born, with great pioneers of volcanology and seismology, from Macedonio Melloni to Luigi Palmieri, from Giuseppe Mercalli to Giuseppe Imbò, up to Alfred Rittmann. The National Institute of Geophysics, wanted by Guglielmo Marconi in 1939 for gemmation by the CNR, the Institute of Seismic Risk of Milan, the Institute of Geochemistry of Fluids of Palermo of which we remember the great contribution of Marcello Carapezza and Mariano Valenza, the 'International Institute of Volcanology of Catania - also of the CNR: these five bodies, thanks to the foresight of Franco Barberi, merged into the current INGV, formalized by Legislative Decree n. 381 of 29 September 1999 and of which Enzo Boschi was the first President.
