The INGV Section of Bologna moves to the Alma Mater spaces to be an integral part of the Physics Campus dedicated to basic and experimental research and technological innovation

With a ceremony scheduled for next Friday 17 February, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) inaugurates the new headquarters of the Bologna Section at the “Augusto Righi” Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Bologna.
In the presence of the President of INGV, Prof. Carlo Doglioni, the Rector of the University of Bologna, Prof. Giovanni Molari, and the Director of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Prof. Andrea Cimatti, the research activities of the Section will be presented Bolognese of the INGV, from the dynamics of volcanoes, to seismic hazard up to the most advanced techniques for the study of the physical environment in its broadest sense.
"For INGV, sharing with an Alma Mater with a very high cultural density such as the University of Bologna is an unavoidable step for a research institution, that is, collaborating more and more with the university world, as has been the case for decades for other institutions research centers such as CNR, INFN and INAF. INGV carries out basic and applied research, maintains and develops fundamental infrastructures for the development of knowledge of the Earth system, and also collaborates in the preparation of new researchers through joint research doctorates with universities. The new relationship with the University of Bologna is essential for increasing scientific collaborations"
, declares the President of INGV Carlo Doglioni. “The new headquarters in Bologna, inaugurated within the Department of Physics and Astronomy of UniBO, represents an important development opportunity for INGV. The interaction with the academic reality and with other scientific realities will contribute to the achievement of increasingly fruitful results for research and for its social implications".
The inauguration of the new headquarters is the final act of a long process of collaboration between the Institute and the University of Bologna started in 2019 with the signing of an agreement for the creation of a Physics Campus within the Alma Mater which also includes the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC).
"The transfer of our Section to the new headquarters at the Alma Mater will allow us to deepen the fruitful collaboration with our fellow researchers at the University not only by implementing basic and experimental research in the field of Earth Sciences but also by developing technological infrastructures within the framework dedicated to Big Data and Artificial Intelligence”, adds the Director of the INGV Section of Bologna, Micol Todesco. "The new headquarters will host modern and functional laboratories and advanced equipment that will allow for even more development of the many researches that are carried out in a Section that embraces all the Departments of INGV: Earthquakes, Volcanoes and the Environment".
The collaboration between INGV and UniBO will allow the sharing of skills, equipment and laboratories for a better rationalization of scientific resources also with a view to greater environmental and energy sustainability.
