Castle of Santa Severa, Santa Severa (RM)  |  Santa Severa Castle, Italy

The workshop The Roman fish tanks of the Mediterranean: constraints and interpretation for definition of sea level changes during the last 20 years (Le peschiere romane del Mediterranean: constraints and interpretations for the definition of sea level variations over the last 22 years).

Organized by the Polo Museale Civico di Santa Marinella - Museum of the Sea and Ancient Navigation, by the Society for the Study of Ancient Coastlines - AKTES and by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the workshop represents an opportunity for discussion and sharing of contents on Peschiere Mediterranean Romans. These structures provide unique information on sea level change over the last 2000 years as well as important insights into aquaculture and lifestyles during the Roman period, mainly between 200 BC and AD 200.
A particularly important feature is their functionality strictly linked to the amplitude of the tide and the mean sea level of the place at the time of their construction.
Their current position with respect to sea level provides an extremely useful reference for archaeological and geophysical studies. Sea level variations, climate change and anthropization are increasingly threatening these structures.
It therefore becomes essential to protect them due to their high archaeological and environmental value

How to participate:
You are invited to submit a title and a short abstract (up to 250 words, in English) of your contribution to the Organizing Secretariat:

Call for workshop contributions | In Santa Severa a meeting to talk about the Roman fish tanks of the Mediterranean

From 20 to 22 September 2022, the workshop The Roman fish tanks of the Mediterranean: constraints and interpretation for definition of sea level changes during the last 2000 years will be held at the castle of Santa Severa (Santa Marinella, RM).
Organized by Polo Museale Civico di Santa Marinella - Museum of the Sea and Ancient Navigation, Society for the Study of Ancient Coastlines - AKTES and National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. The workshop represents an opportunity for discussion and knowledge sharing about the Roman fish tanks of the Mediterranean.
These structures provide important insights into the sea level changes in the last 2000 years besides fish-culture techniques and lifestyles during the Roman period, between 200 BC and 200 AD.
A particular feature is their functionality, which is closely linked to the tidal range and mean sea level at the time of their use. Their current state of submergence or uplit provides a reference level for archaeological and geophysical studies.

Sea level rise, climate change and anthropopic pressure are threatening these valuable structures that require urgent measures for their protection.

How to participate:
You are invited to submit a title and a short abstract (up to 250 words, in English) of your contribution to the Organizing Secretariat:
