The next 27th November From 9:30, in the headquarters of Etna-Nicolosi Park – Via del Convento 45 Nicolosi (CT) – will be held on Workshop by Title The 1971 Etna eruption between history and volcanology.
The event is organized by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology - Etna Observatory (INGV-OE) in collaboration with the Etna Park, which will host the event in its headquarters, and the University of Catania.
The aim of the workshop is to highlight the historical and volcanological importance of the 1971 eruption; from a volcanological point of view, this event marks a significant increase in the frequency of the number of both lateral and summit eruptions of Etna together with a change in the chemical composition of the magma.
Many of these eruptions were produced by the South-East Crater, the summit crater formed during the 1971 eruption, which today is the most active of Etna's summit craters. For these reasons, the lateral eruption of 1971 is considered the event which, after the eruption of 1669, most modified the eruptive behavior of the volcano.
From a historical point of view, the 1971 eruption represents the first lateral eruption studied with the multidisciplinary method introduced in Catania by the volcanologist Alfred Rittmann (1893-1980). Rittmann and his collaborators gave life to a new phase in the volcanological studies of Etna by impressing, starting from the 60s, a new approach that produced an acceleration in the knowledge of the volcano.
A consequence of this was the birth, in 1960, of an international research institute in Catania which in 1970 would become the International Institute of Volcanology (IIV) of the CNR.
Of these research institutions Rittmann had the direction of the scientific council and the honorary presidency, but above all he represented their scientific and cultural soul.
In 2000 the IIV became the Catania section of INGV.
