The "ocean circulation", the so-called "conveyor belt" for which the water masses involved transport both energy (in the form of heat) and materials (dissolved substances such as nutrients, plankton, gases and particles).
THE EDITORIAL
Nature and the Earth are a living system that doesn't go on vacation. The disastrous M 14 earthquake in Haiti on 7.2 August with over 2200 victims, and that of Acapulco M 8 on 7 September, are a reminder of reality: we must continue to study earthquakes, understand their mechanisms and take all possible precautions with proper prevention.
L'GUEST OF HONOR
Discovering the Universe: interview with Marco Tavani, President of INAF
The Italian presence in space stations is increasingly important, the main national participation is in the international space station for which our industries have created numerous components. What is expected of our country in this important sector? We asked the President of INAF Marco Tavani. Head of the main Italian research body for the study of the universe, Professor Tavani told us about his professional career in an interview to be read and invites young people who intend to approach this fascinating scientific sector.

INTERVIEW A
It's hard to find a guy with Mario Anselmi's "cleaner face". We could conclude this introduction here. But no, because Mario (43 years old only at the registry office... he looks ten younger), is the classic nice guy you would like as a neighbor, as a friend and confidant, as a baker, as a florist, as a ticket inspector of the bus… here we need a Mario Anselmi for every role in society. I am exaggerating? Maybe yes, but Mario always welcomes you with a smile and is ready to tell you what he has or to listen to yours. Without compromises. You see it, you feel it, you can trust it and, if my sixth sense doesn't deceive me, keeping it "close" makes you feel good. This interview won't shock you, dear reader, because his is a life of extraordinary ordinariness, but I'm sure you'll be able to grasp many virtues now rare and dissolved in this present. Today it's rare to be yourself, Mario is.
LAB EXPERIENCES
The Drone Laboratory of the INGV Vesuvius Observatory
Recently established, the INGV Vesuvius Observatory of Naples Drone Laboratory is already a point of reference in volcanic monitoring, especially in the areas of Ischia, Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei. INGV always keeps up with technological progress and the use of drones in the scientific field is proving to be an important investment for the purpose of an ever greater understanding of natural events. We asked the Laboratory manager, Pasquale Belviso, to tell us about the work that takes place in the Lab and development projects for the future.
THE EARTH TELLS
September 30, 1789: earthquake in Valtiberina
On 30 September 1789 a strong seismic event struck the Valtiberina, between Tuscany and Umbria. There were two States that had to face the emergency, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the State of the Church. It was a very particular historical moment, that of the French Revolution, and this greatly influenced the sources that have come down to us. Viviana Castelli, an INGV expert who deals with historical research on earthquakes for seismological purposes, told us what happened in that troubled period.

MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP
The INGV Vesuvius Observatory. Interview with Director Francesca Bianco
An Observatory with a noble and ancient history behind it, born even before Italy was unified under a single Kingdom. A reference volcanic research and surveillance pole for our country, and beyond. The Vesuvian Observatory of Naples is the new stop on our journey to discover the Sections of the INGV. We interviewed its Director, Francesca Bianco, who guided us in our story of the OV: with her, at its helm since 2016, we retraced some of the most important events that have affected the Observatory in recent years, without losing sight the prospective vision for the future and for the growth of this crucial monitoring Section of the Institute, which has always been a point of reference in the area for the hundreds of thousands of citizens who inhabit the areas of the Neapolitan volcanoes.
