Ever louder, ever grander. Etna, 22 – 25 February 2021
THE EDITORIAL
Time, the Earth and life… it is the vertigo of geology.
Geosciences deal with everything related to the planet, how it is made, how it was formed, how it works.
We are made of Earth's mantle atoms that have traveled from the interior of the planet to its surface in millions, even billions of years.
The planet is alive, it breathes.
With its dynamics it has generated the oceans, the mountains, the atmosphere; produces earthquakes, eruptions, landslides, floods.
We are the Earth; geology takes us on this fascinating journey of the development of everything we know around us, taking us into dizzying dimensions of time and space.
L'GUEST OF HONOR
A look at the world of robotics: an interview with Agnese Chiatti
Robots are definitely the future but what is the future of robots? We asked Agnese Chiatti, a PhD candidate at the Knowledge Media Institute of the Open University of Milton Keynes, in the United Kingdom. Agnese deals with the creation of robots useful for human life and, as a guest of our virtual living room, she answered our curiosities by telling us something about her about her professional career.

A RESEARCHER'S LIFE
IDENTITY CARD
INTERVIEW A
In the small barrel there is good wine! A saying never so true when it comes to Maria Grazia Ciaccio. A City girl with an alternative soul, rock, black color that offers a kaleidoscope of colors. Possible? Yes. Because Maria Grazia lives next to the mass, to the so-called normality. She faced it and learned to live with prejudices, with the surface and patina of life. Determined and punctual, she never misses an appointment with her ideals. She doesn't impose them on you, but she never compromises, with a smile. A rarity. The portrait of Maria Grazia will amaze only those who have not had the opportunity to know her and her thousand colors that give us an important teaching ...Forever trusting who we are, and nothing else matters.
LAB EXPERIENCES
The Electronics Laboratory of Catania
An apparently 'service' laboratory, which nonetheless supervises the design and preparation of all the instruments necessary for remote sensing geochemical surveillance of the active volcanoes of Sicily. A delicate and fundamental work that takes place in the Electronics Laboratory of Catania, between scientific experiments, research activities and measurements of various kinds. To find out more, we interviewed Filippo Murè, Laboratory Manager who works every day in the Lab between designs, assemblies and repairs, with the scientific support of colleagues from the Geochemistry Operational Area of INGV-OE.

THE EARTH TELLS
The Tōhoku earthquake of March 11, 2011: what do we know ten years later?
Ten years have passed since the disastrous earthquake that hit the Tōhoku region of Japan. Following the earthquake, a tsunami, the strongest documented in the area, hit the Japanese coast causing damage and casualties. To find out what happened and what was discovered about the event, we interviewed Fabrizio Romano, INGV researcher and expert on the subject.

MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP
Earthquakes and site effects: the EMERSITO Operational Group
A team that works to study the relationships between the types of soil crossed by seismic waves and earthquakes recorded on the surface, offering answers to the scientific community and political decision-makers to rebuild safely after the most destructive events. The EMERSITO Operational Group of INGV has a ten-year history behind it and brings together researchers from all the Sections and many Institute locations under a single aegis. We interviewed his Coordinator, Fabrizio Cara, to learn more about the activities he carries out with his colleagues and let him tell us some of the most important episodes for him in his years at the helm of the team.
