Red in the evening at Etna: The lava show at sunset
THE EDITORIAL
We are not out of the pandemic yet: the fight against the virus is still ongoing, and this is inevitably reflected in the research activities, human and scientific interactions of our community. Nonetheless, INGV's seismic, volcanic and environmental monitoring and surveillance have never stopped and this period of apparent suspension and disorientation has been used to plan INGV's future activities. Relations with universities through scientific collaboration agreements, the creation of INGV offices within universities and joint research doctorates have flourished to strengthen the inevitable and profitable symbiosis between the world of research and training.
L'GUEST OF HONOR
Interview with Daniele Franco, Minister of Economy and Finance
Research funding is emerging as one of the main targets of European countries in intervention plans to support growth. In Italy, where scientific research has never been seen as a main "asset" of the economy of our country, an economic intervention in this sector with important values would constitute a cultural turning point. But can the relaunch of research really offer a positive boost to Italy's production system? We asked Dr. Daniele Franco, in the first weeks of February, in his role as Director General of the Bank of Italy and President of IVASS. Daniele Franco has been the Minister of Economy and Finance of the Italian Republic since 13 February. His words and his vision of the future, also in the economic incentives for research, now take on a very absolute value, precisely in view of the great economic challenge that Italy will face in the coming years.

INTERVIEW A
He loves music, a good glass of wine and despite his "young" age he has already achieved important goals in his life. Of all, having a large family. This month we interviewed Antonio Guarnieri, a thoughtful engineer who as a child dreamed of being a toll collector but was then fascinated by a room full of books…by knowledge. Concerned about a drift of "dominant thoughts" and the ever-increasing difficulty of confronting each other (despite the numerous means of communication we have), Antonio has traced a path to follow in the path of life and his determination (or as he puts it adaptability) enabled him to keep the bow straight.
LAB EXPERIENCES
The LA-ICPMS Laboratory of the Palermo Section
An extremely versatile and technological Lab is located in the Palermo branch of INGV: the LA-ICPMS Laser Ablation Laboratory. Thanks to the state-of-the-art instrumentation, the content of trace elements in samples of various kinds is analysed, with micrometric spatial resolution. This has allowed him, over time, to adapt to very different purposes: from volcanological investigations to environmental and biological studies on the impact that pollution has on marine organisms, passing through the analysis of archaeological finds in the field of cultural heritage. We interviewed Antonio Paonita, first INGV researcher as well as LA-ICPMS Laboratory Manager, to learn more about the activities he carries out every day together with his colleagues.

THE EARTH TELLS
Who designed the first anti-seismic house? A lesson from history
Who designed the first anti-seismic house and what characteristics did it have? We asked Emanuela Guidoboni, INGV historian and seismologist, who has carried out in-depth studies on the subject. Guest of our virtual living room, Emanuela Guidoboni gave us a picture of what happened after a major earthquake in the Po Valley almost five hundred years ago.

MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP
Deformations, fractures and faulting: EMERGEO and the study of the co-seismic effects of earthquakes
A careful and meticulous field work, to be completed in the shortest possible time to ensure that all the small or large effects that strong earthquakes produce on the environment are detected, photographed and catalogued. The INGV EMERGEO Operational Group has been operating for almost twenty years thanks to a multidisciplinary team made up of about a hundred experts distributed throughout the national territory: the fundamental objective of the team is to study the surface effects of seismic events and provide indications and answers for scientific and civil protection purposes. A team effort that takes place in Italy and in the Mediterranean area, to support research and assist citizens in understanding the scars that earthquakes leave under the eyes of those who live in the affected areas. We interviewed Paolo Marco De Martini, INGV researcher and EMERGEO national coordinator, to learn more about the activities of his Operational Group and let us tell him about the episodes that most struck and moved him in the field campaigns carried out during the seismic emergencies of the last years.
