The enhancement of volcanic monitoring activities at Vulcano
THE EDITORIAL
There is no scientific sector less important than another because all the sciences are connected to each other and the strength of the progress of knowledge consists precisely in the discovery of the infinite interconnections.
Italy is rapidly taking action to implement the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), a great opportunity for the nation to relaunch.
Among the public research bodies, INGV is the one specialized in the study of geosciences, i.e. we are dedicated to understanding our planet, how it is made and how it works, with its natural hazards and resources. In reality we know only a part of the Earth - mostly superficial - while, deep down, it is still to be discovered. Understanding the "rules" of the Earth means protecting ourselves from its natural 'intemperance'.

IDENTITY CARD
Qualification: technologist
Field of activity: Mainly the study of seismic-acoustic signals acquired in a volcanic environment.
INTERVIEW A
A staid boy, with his feet firmly planted in the land where he grew up with his family, but for whom the most significant moments of his life have always been marked by lightning strikes: for his life partner, for nature and science or for a new bicycle as a child. Sincerity, generosity and curiosity are for him the antidotes to a world in which, too often, stupidity and human limitations frighten and condition the course of events. The protagonist of this month is Luciano Zuccarello, a life expertly orchestrated between family, sport and work, without forgetting some peaceful forays into the kitchen, cultivating the sensitivity typical of those who manage to find answers to large or small daily dilemmas between the pages of a book or between the notes of a song.
LAB EXPERIENCES
The Laboratory of Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis of the Vesuvian Observatory
A versatile laboratory for studying the dynamics of volcanoes and magmas, with particular attention also paid to geothermal and hydrothermal systems. Housed in the INGV Vesuvius Observatory of Naples, the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis (EDS-BSEM) allows the researchers working within it to carry out sophisticated investigations of very high resolution samples and to obtain images useful for the study in different disciplinary fields, from geology to medicine, passing through engineering. We interviewed the Head of the Lab, Monica Piochi, to let us tell her something more about the Laboratory and the activities it carries out.
THE EARTH TELLS
An enveloping journey through the events of the most famous eruption in history, that of Vesuvius in 79. AD In a single story that unfolds in four volumes, the geologist Lisetta Giacomelli and the volcanologist Roberto Scandone retrace - with the meticulousness of scientists - what happened in that eruption and the events that characterized those places over the centuries.

MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP
INGV at the University of Cassino. A new headquarters for research.
Among the many institutional tasks that characterize the mission INGV has always stipulated and maintained collaborative relationships with other relevant entities on the national and international scientific scene, such as universities. On 22 October last, during a celebratory day which saw the participation of the two institutions involved, the Institute has officially inaugurated its new headquarters at the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio (UNICAS).
