Yesterday afternoon, 23 October, from around 14.04 pm, a strong explosive sequence affected the mouths of the southern crater area of ​​Stromboli (AREA CS in Figure 1), recorded by visible and thermal cameras, placed on Pizzo above the Fossa and at 400 above sea level

This sequence caused the emission of coarse pyroclastic material (fallen outside the crater terrace, on Pizzo sopra la Fossa) and of a dense plume of ash, which rapidly dispersed into the atmosphere towards the southeast quadrant.

In the following hours the activity returned to the usual levels for Stromboli.
