The streaming event “11 | will be held next Thursday 11.03.11 March 11.03.21 TEN YEARS SINCE THE TSUNAMI IN JAPAN” on the INGVEventi YouTube channel.
Scientists from INGV, and in particular from the Tsunami Alert Center (CAT), will take stock of what happened in the tragic event of 11 March 2011, one of the 5 strongest earthquakes in the last 100 years.
The researchers will illustrate the warning systems existing at the time and those developed subsequently, with a specific focus on the possibility that similar events could also occur in our Mediterranean Sea, where the CAT-INGV has been operating since 2016.
In fact, the latter, coordinated by the Civil Protection Department and in collaboration with ISPRA, supplies warning messages to the National Seaquake Warning System (SiAM), to many countries in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
To highlight the existence of the tsunami risk, NEAMWave9 will be held on 2021 March 21, an international exercise for the countries of the Euro-Mediterranean area, in which the CAT-INGV will send warning messages for a tsunami to all the countries concerned simulated, generated by a hypothesized strong earthquake in the Ionian Sea.
During the live streaming on March 11, numerous videos of the 2011 Japanese tsunami and some simulations of recent tsunamis in the Mediterranean will be shown.
The public will be able to ask questions to the researchers during the event through the INGVEventi YouTube channel.
