COVER STORY
THE EDITORIAL
The scientific interests of which INGV is an actor range in the various fields of geophysical and volcanological research. But there are different "lenses" with which to look at our "planet" system.
In this issue of "INGVNewsletter" we wanted to tell the research from some of the many possible "lenses". And, on this journey, the first meeting is with Father Mauro Oliva, Chaplain of the Research Organizations supervised by the MUR, who represented to us how science and the transcendent can actually have many affinities, both working in the search for the common good.
L'GUEST OF HONOR
Science and Faith: interview with Father Mauro Oliva, Chaplain of the Research Institutes of the MUR
A life dedicated to the search for who he is really the man, with a past linked to medical studies and a future centered on collaboration with research institutions. Father Mauro Oliva has been, since 2017, the Chaplain of the Research Institutions supervised by the MUR. His task is to encourage and keep alive the comparison between scientific and humanistic disciplines, facilitating the interaction of knowledge.

A RESEARCHER'S LIFE
INTERVIEW A
The 1971 eruption of Etna was the spark that lit up the eyes of a five-year-old boy who from that moment on saw his life take a very clear direction: to become a volcanologist. Passionate about his work and full of hobbies, Salvatore Giammanco tells us about his life and how passion is the fundamental ingredient to better face life, its pleasures and its difficulties.

LAB EXPERIENCES
Palermo Mechanics Laboratory - Interview with Paolo Cosenza
The INGV Mechanics Laboratory, located at the Institute's Palermo headquarters, carries out technical support activities for the volcanic and seismic surveillance of our national territory. Established in 1995, it deals with the resolution of technical-practical problems that arise during research and surveillance activities. We talked about it with Paolo Cosenza, technical manager who works daily within the Lab.
THE EARTH TELLS
The Circeo between myth and geology: history of the ancient level of the Mediterranean
Proud and solitary, nestled in the placid quiet of the Pontine plain, the promontory of Circeo stands out against the profile of the Lazio coast, plunging into the segment of sea between Sabaudia and Terracina. Today home to a historic national park, this almost untouched corner of Mediterranean maquis actually tells ancient stories which, between myth and legend, are rooted in the events that made Ulysses' journey to Ithaca adventurous after the Trojan War.

MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP
INGV and Rende, science at the service of the community
Investigate the seismic aspects of the territory and work on the culture of risk prevention: this is the objective of the agreement recently signed between the municipality of Rende, in the province of Cosenza, and INGV. The signing of the memorandum of understanding establishes the launch of a series of activities aimed at citizens and schools and the establishment of a room for monitoring activities. To find out more, we interviewed Salvatore Stramondo, Director of the INGV National Earthquake Observatory who explained to us what this project consists of, which sees community and scientific research collaborating in synergy.
