In the last 30 days, the area south of Camerino, in the province of Macerata, has been affected by an increase in seismic activity with earthquakes reaching magnitude values ​​(Mw) of 4.0 on 4 April at 4.19 am Italian time.

These events are part of the seismic sequence that began on 24 August 2016 with the event of magnitude Mw 6.0, which took place near Amatrice and Accumoli (RI) and culminated with the seismic event of 30 October 2016 of magnitude Mw 6.5. The sequence gradually developed, involving a large strip of the central Apennines, an area of ​​1200 km2, extending for about 80 km in the NNW-SSE direction and about 15-20 km wide, from the province of Macerata, in the Marche to the province of L'Aquila, in Abruzzo.

The area affected by the earthquakes of recent days was activated at the end of October 2016, between 26 and 30 October, when some of the strongest seismic events of the sequence occurred: those of the October 26 of magnitude Mw 5.4 e magnitude Mw 5.9 and magnitude Mw 6.5 dated October 30, 2016.
