The earthquake was well felt throughout the area, as can be deduced from the shaking maps produced with the data from the seismic and accelerometric networks and from the "did you feel the earthquake?" questionnaire.

In historical times the area in question has been hit by earthquakes with a magnitude of around 5.5. In particular, the earthquakes of June 1767 and September 1878, both with an estimated magnitude of 5.4 and which occurred near today's epicenter, are mentioned. More recently, we recall the Massa Martana earthquake of magnitude 4.6, with its epicenter about 15 km further west, which occurred in May 1997.

Following the shock of 04:36, 11.00 aftershocks were recorded up to 12 in Italy, the strongest of magnitude 2.5 which occurred at 06.35. Further information and maps are available on the INGV website on the event page.
