Tomorrow 9 June at 11.00, in the Council Chamber of Palazzo San Giacomo - Piazza Municipio - in Naples, the Vesuvius Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (OV-INGV) will hold a press conference on the theme: Campi Flegrei Deep Drilling Project . Results of the first part of the Project and implications for research and monitoring in the Neapolitan volcanic area.
The Conference will illustrate, in popular terms, the important results achieved in the first part of the project, which have given rise to further activities of crucial importance for the scientific understanding of the volcanism of the Neapolitan area and for monitoring activities.
In particular, the first part of the Campi Flegrei Deep Drilling Project (CFDDP), in addition to providing important and innovative scientific results on the history and evolution of the Phlegrean caldera and on the mechanisms that generate bradyseism phenomena, has made it possible to create the first nucleus of a 'Osservatorio Vulcanologico Profondo' (Campi Flegrei Deep Observatory, acronym CFDO), which was then considerably expanded in the context of subsequent infrastructural projects and also extended to other areas. As a result, OV-INGV now has a technologically advanced monitoring network of well instrumentation. This new network, combined with the strengthening of the surface monitoring networks, makes it possible to detect even the smallest seismic and volcanic phenomena in the Neapolitan volcanic area with extreme precision, previously impossible, making our volcanic areas the most monitored in the world.
The coordinators of the international project, both from INGV, Claudia Troise and Giuseppe De Natale, the latter also director of OV-INGV, and the researchers involved will take part in the press conference.
