The media perception of a significant increase in seismicity on a global scale does not coincide with the real data that can be deduced from rigorous scientific analysis. This is what emerges from a post published on the INGVterremoti Blog by researchers from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), who have been involved in verifying the relationship between the number of seismic events in the world and the growing attention paid to them by citizens and, therefore, by the media.
Using the world catalog of earthquakes managed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), compiled with homogeneous criteria and sufficiently complete for the highest magnitudes, the INGV researchers analyzed the seismicity on a global scale for magnitude 5 or higher in the period between 1950 and 2019.
The results of the observations revealed that, although the earthquakes do not follow any "exact" cyclicity and the annual average values are statistical parameters without any physical meaning, the trend of the seismic events is regular and no effective increase in seismic activity is evident. of the greatest energy in the world.
