In this video (https://youtu.be/75O7SEJMfuc) is shown a computer representation of the preliminary localization of the mean failure plane (plane that approximates the source fault) of the Amatrice earthquake of 24 August at 03:36 Italian time.

The plan was obtained from a mathematical model that uses the values of the displacement of the ground due to the deep displacement of the fault, derived from InSAR satellite data (more info in INGV report).

The main event of the sequence, of magnitude 6.0 is the red symbol. The purple symbols are the other major events in the sequence. The black dots are all the other events localized by INGV until August 29th.

The colors on the fault plane indicate the value of the relative sliding of the two edges of the earth's crust on the two sides of the break, which varies between gray = 0 and blue = 1.3 metres.

The village of Accumoli is located on the vertical line of the area of maximum sliding on the fault (the more superficial blue area).

On surface the red lines represent the traces of faults from the geological bibliography, while the purple line indicates the emergence of the fault plane estimated by the model. The trace of the source fault identified is very close to the traces of the M. Gorzano/Laga faults, to the south, and to the M. Vettore fault to the north.

The model, although currently based on tens of thousands of measurement points, is not yet definitive and the position of the trace (or even the number of faults) could change.
