The Scientific Training Course on the "History of Oceanography", promoted by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in collaboration with the Italian Navy, will take place from 11 to 18 October. The course will take place on board the "Vespucci" school ship which will be moored inside the Arsenale of the Navy of La Spezia and will be attended by 30 students from various Italian universities.
The objective is to make known the oceanographic technologies and methodologies of the past in order to understand their historical evolution. During their stay on board, students will participate in seminars by scholars who will talk about marine technologies of yesterday and today, underwater physiology, the marine environment, navigation and exploration of the sea. Students will be able to deal with ancient instruments specially made available by the partners.
The program, full of initiatives, includes seminars, practical activities and guided visits to numerous structures of the Navy such as: Hydrographic Institute of the Navy (Genoa), Naval Experimentation Support Center (La Spezia) and the NATO Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (Spice). In addition, guided tours have been organized at the Aquarium of Genoa, the Galata Sea Museum of Genoa, the Naval Technical Museum of La Spezia and the planetarium of the Istituto Statale Superiore "Sauro-Capellini".
The training event sees the technical-scientific support of: Historical Oceanography Society (HOS), Ligurian District of Marine Technologies (DLTM), International School of Marine Technologies (SITM), Hydrographic Institute of the Navy (IIM), Environmental Monitoring and Research Innovativa Strategica (MARIS), Naval Experimentation Support Center (CSSN) and the NATO Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE).
They have given their patronage to the “Costa Edutainment-Acquario di Genova” initiative, the Port Authority of La Spezia and the “Sauro-Capellini” State Institute.
