Geochemists, volcanologists, seismologists and historians of geosciences of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Genoa for the annual appointment at the Science Festival from 22 October to 1 November 2015, the key word being balance. To crown a more than ten-year collaboration, this year INGV participates as a member of the Festival, a point of reference for the dissemination of science and scientific culture at an international level. An occasion for researchers, enthusiasts, schools and families to meet.
Many initiatives:
From 22 October to 1 November, the exhibition: "1915-2015: One hundred years after the Marsica earthquake, the fragile balance of memories", at the Palazzo Ducale Munizioniere, Piazza Matteotti ( http://www.festivalscienza.it/site/home/programma/eventi-per-tipo/mostre/1915-2015-cento-anni-dal-terremoto-della-.html). A story of the earthquake as a physical phenomenon alongside a historical examination of the Marsica event of 1915: the facts, the causes and the damages, the vicissitudes of countries and societies destroyed not only by the earthquake but also by the First World War. An opportunity to bring to light pages of national culture, of scientific and social reflection, often forgotten by residents of seismic areas or unknown to new generations. Installations such as the Time Machine, the seismic station and the Vibrating Table will allow you to experience first-hand and understand a phenomenon that continues to affect our country.
25 October, at 17,00 pm the scientific café: Ondulatory sussultorio: the direct line between the breaking of a balance and earthquake damage, curated by Maria Grazia Ciaccio and Giovanna Cultrera, at the Coop Genoa Porto Antico Library, Millo Building - Calata Cattaneo 1 (http://www.festivalscienza.it/site/home/programma/eventi-per-tipo/conferenze/caffe-scientifici.html). Authors of the book "Earthquakes and Seismic Risks" from which the meeting takes its cue, the two INGV seismologists will talk about their experiences and the reasons that led them to write an informative text which, in addition to answering the most common questions earthquake phenomenon aims to underline the importance of studies on seismic hazard and prevention in defense against the effects of earthquakes.
26 October, at 18,00 the meeting/conference: The development of environmentally friendly geothermal energy. Pilot geothermal plants with zero emissions into the atmosphere, curated by Maria Luisa Carapezza, Nicola Pagliuca, Massimo Ranaldi, at the Palazzo Ducale, Sala del Minor Consiglio
Piazza Matteotti 9 ( http://www.festivalscienza.it/site/home/programma/eventi-per-tipo/conferenze/lo-sviluppo-di-energia-geotermica-ecocompa.html ). We will talk about planet Earth and the internal heat that is continuously released towards the surface, and the efforts of the scientific community to use this heat for energy purposes. Italy is today the leading producer of geothermal energy in Europe. Traditional power plants emit gases into the atmosphere causing delicate environmental problems. Since 2011, the legislation has introduced the experimentation of pilot geothermal plants with zero emissions and total re-injection of the extracted fluid. Various technological solutions have been studied to avoid the emission of gases into the atmosphere. The success of this experimentation will open up important prospects for the development of an environmentally friendly geothermal industry.
