In memory of the violent earthquake that hit Florence and the neighboring towns 120 years ago, on Monday 18 May from 16.30 to 19.00 pm the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and the Ximenian Observatory Foundation (FOX) are organizing, in the Sala Luca Giordano of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence, a series of scientific-popular interventions on the seismicity of the Florentine area and on how to defend oneself from the related effects, also highlighting the certainties and uncertainties of seismology 120 years later. On 18 May 1895 at 20:55 an earthquake, with epicentral intensity of grade VIII on the Mercalli-Cancani-Sieberg scale and magnitude 5.4, caused very serious damage in an area about ten kilometers south of Florence. Collapses occurred in Sant'Andrea in Percussina, Impruneta, Bagno a Ripoli, Tavarnuzze, Impruneta, Croce a Varliano, Osteria Nuova, Pozzolatico and ai Falciani. In the Certosa del Galluzzo, the entire north-western side of the Great Cloister collapsed, destroying precious Della Robbia works. Even the historical-monumental and artistic heritage of Florence was seriously offended. The seismological community of the time, of which the Ximenian Observatory of Florence represented an excellence, tried to understand and interpret the event and give answers to the population. Speakers will include the President of INGV, Stefano Gresta, the President of FOX of Florence, Mario Calamia, researchers from INGV and the University of Florence and a representation from the Municipality of Florence.
