A strategic agreement to study new water resources, monitor groundwater, and strengthen the resilience of the Lucanian territories.

Acquedotto Lucano SpA and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at addressing the water crisis in Basilicata.
The agreement establishes a structured collaboration to identify new water resources and develop geological and geochemical studies and monitoring in the region.
The Protocol provides for joint research and systematic groundwater surveys, with the aim of strengthening the security of water supplies, improving knowledge of Lucanian springs, and analyzing the effects of climate change on aquifers.
The Protocol is part of the "European Water Resilience Strategy" adopted by the European Commission on 4 June 2025, which promotes public and private actions and investments aimed at making Europe more resilient to water scarcity by 2030. The parties share the goal of building a cooperation model consistent with European guidelines and suitable for facilitating access to dedicated financing and investments.
INGV's experience in fluid monitoring and research on geodynamic processes can significantly contribute to our understanding of Lucanian water resources. The collaboration with Acquedotto Lucano is an opportunity to combine complementary skills and generate information useful for both science and community protection.
