The meeting focused on scientific collaboration between the two countries, as well as the Institute's role in volcanological research and emergency management.
The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) hosted today, at the headquarters in Rome, the Japanese delegation led by Senator Aoki Kazuhiko, For a discussion dedicated to research, monitoring, and prevention activities related to volcanic risk.
Present were the Director of the INGV Earthquake Department, Salvatore Stramondo, the Coordinator of the Tsunami Warning Center (CAT-INGV), Stefano Lorito and, connected from the operations room in Catania, the Director of the Etna Observatory, Salvatore Gambino, and the Head of the Volcanology Functional Unit, Letizia Spampinato.
The meeting provided an opportunity to explore the role of the INGV in the national volcanological research system, with particular reference to the activities carried out in the event of an eruption, the dissemination of information, and the support provided to institutions and the public.
Among the topics discussed with the Japanese delegation were the INGV's contribution to the preparation of emergency plans at the national and local levels, collaboration with universities and other research institutions, and international cooperation with countries with numerous volcanoes.
The visit provided an opportunity to deepen our respective experiences in volcanic risk research and management and to continue the scientific dialogue between Italy and Japan, including through the development of future collaborative activities.
