Rome, February 28 2017

From 18.00 (local time) yesterday, February 27, the Strombolian activity of Etna at the new south-east crater (NCSE), which began last January 23, has gradually intensified, generating a lava flow which, after rapidly having reached the base of the cone, it slowly headed southwest, in the direction of Monte Frumento Supino. The front of the latter is currently at an altitude of approximately 2850 m asl
Strombolian activity is still associated with an emission of ash from the NCSE, which is dispersed by the winds in the direction of the eastern quadrants. A modest ash fallout was reported on the towns of Zafferana and Linguaglossa.
As regards the volcanic tremor, after the sudden increase in its average amplitude, which began at 18.00 yesterday, it roughly stabilized at high values from 20.00 onwards, recording the maximum between 23.00 yesterday and 01.00 today. Since the early hours of this morning, the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor, while remaining at high values, has shown modest fluctuations.
The deformations of the ground, acquired by GPS stations at high sampling frequency, and the clinometer signals, do not show significant variations associated with the intensification of the eruptive activity.
