With a rich program of both face-to-face and online conferences, INGV participates in the new edition of the Rome Science Festival, this year organized around the theme of "Challenges"
Back to from the 22 28 2021 November, in the spaces ofMusic Park Auditorium (Via Pietro de Coubertin, 30 - Rome), the XVI edition of Rome Science Festival, produced by the Musica per Roma Foundation with the planning partnership of Codice Edizioni and promoted by the Department of Cultural Growth of Roma Capitale.
Le “Challenges” will be told in seven thematic areas: Planet. The changing world, Society and economy, Health and medicine, Universe and Space, Technology and innovation, Brain and thought, Cornerstones of science.
The aim of the Festival is to involve the general public with over 100 events organized in presence and in streaming, to reflect on the meaning and role of science today, with an eye to the future but without forgetting the discoveries of the past that have brought us here.
THENational Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), among the protagonists of the Festival together with the other major Italian Research Institutions, will participate in the event with a calendar of four conferences.
Saturday November 27, 2021 | 12:30 | Online conference
“Ocean Decade. A decade to save the sea”
The decade dedicated to marine sciences, ocean protection and socio-economic development in harmony with the environmental balance wanted by the United Nations opens this year with the important objective of stimulating scientific research.
Interventions
Alexander Amato (INGV Tsunami Warning Centre)
John Coppini (CMCC)
Donatella de Pascale (Anton Dohrn Zoological Station)
Erika Magaletti (ISPRA)
Moderator
John Spataro (scientific journalist "Le Scienze")
Saturday November 27, 2021 | 14:00 | Online conference
“The Challenge of Earthquake Prediction”
Earthquake prediction is considered a chimera. The reason why we still don't know where, when and how big an earthquake will be lies in the strong knowledge gaps on the origin of geodynamics and consequent seismicity. However, multi-parameter Earth monitoring networks are growing and a picture of the possible precursors of an earthquake is beginning to emerge. Thanks to new knowledge, in the future it will perhaps be possible to predict seismic events, but it is much more important to make one's houses anti-seismic, even when we will be able to predict earthquakes.
Interventions
Carlo Doglioni (President of INGV)
Marco Tavani (President of INAF)
Angelo De Santis (Research Associate of INGV)
Moderator
Elisa Nickelli (astrophysicist, INAF popularizer and science journalist)
Sunday November 28, 2021 | 12:00 | Studio Borgna Theatre
“Gravitational waves: from the cosmos to the underground”
Einstein Telescope (ET) is a project for the realization of the European detector of gravitational waves. Gravitational waves travel for millions of light-years before reaching Earth, arriving as very faint signals. But the revelation of these elusive cosmic messages is threatened by the continuous vibrations of the ground, caused by both natural and man-made phenomena. The story is that of the research that scholars of the Earth and the Cosmos are conducting to identify the most suitable site to host ETs, which could be built right in our country, in Sardinia.
Interventions
Alessandro cardini (INFN)
Gilberto Saccorotti (INGV)
Moderator
Enrica Battifoglia (journalist, manager of the ANSA Science & Technology channel)
Sunday November 28, 2021 | 12:30 | Online conference
"Sounds from the Deep"
Observing and monitoring underwater sound for environmental and geophysical purposes is as important as it is complex: cost-effective solutions need to be developed that cover the entire acquisition chain, from sensors to platforms, from communication to data processing and delivery. Researchers Francesco Simeone, from the INGV Environment Department, and Francesco Caruso, from the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station, will talk about this challenge immersed in the depths of the sea.
Interventions
Francis Caruso (Anton Dohrn Zoological Station)
Francis Simeon (INGV)
Moderator
John Spataro (scientific journalist "Le Scienze")
from Tuesday 23 November to Friday 26 November 2021 | 10:00 am | Lab/Quiz online
Salvina and the earthquake: what will she do?
Taken from Salvina's choices, here is an online challenge between classes in which the teams will have to draw on their resources and knowledge of natural phenomena in order not to be caught unprepared and act promptly to help our Savior, called Salvina, to overcome everyone unharmed the dangers by adopting the correct behavior in the event of an earthquake and tsunami. The aim of the game is to encourage the automatic choice of good behavioral practices by stimulating the mind, intuition and logic from the point of view of team building.
Event dedicated to students from the fourth class of the primary school to the first class of the 1st grade secondary school
