The appointment with the Village for the Earth which will take place at the Villa Borghese Galoppatoio and on the Pincio Terrace in Rome from 21 to 25 April, with five days of initiatives dedicated to protecting the planet, to create and spread greater awareness of the environment through sharing, having fun , knowledge, experiences. Dedicated to both adults and children, sports enthusiasts, families, students and experts, the village hosts music, science, sports, games, art and food events.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) will be present again this year, after the extraordinary experience of the previous edition.
From the discovery of the secrets of volcanoes to insights into the most unknown aspects of earthquakes, up to compelling multimedia stories on seismic phenomena in our area, these are just some of the initiatives organized by INGV.
At the Terrazza del Pincio from 10.00 to 18.00 at the INGV stand it will be possible to:
- participate in seismology and volcanology laboratories, to learn about the differences between an effusive and explosive eruption, and to explore the more unknown aspects of earthquakes, also through story maps.
- observe live the monitoring work of Italian seismicity through the national seismic network.
- meet INGV researchers on topics such as Rome and earthquakes; Recent events in the Central Apennines; The social communication of earthquakes; the Marsili volcano; Antarctica, infinite laboratory.
In case of rain, the workshops will be suspended. For any program changes, check the website www.villaggioperlaterra.it
With the 47th edition of Earth Day, the World Earth Day established by the United Nations in 1970 to raise awareness among peoples on the issue of environmental protection, the Over the wall Concert for the Earth will take place on the Pincio terrace on Saturday 22 April. At the same time, a global March for science, in defense of the independence of research, will start from Piazza della Rotonda, in front of the Pantheon, and arrive in Piazza Campo de' Fiori, in front of the statue of Giordano Bruno. While on the Pincio terrace, there will be a live link with the Washington march.
The American Geophysical Union (AGU), an association that brings together geophysicists from all over the world, is one of the promoters of the March for science. For the occasion, the AGU will publish a special collection of texts commissioned from researchers of different disciplines and different countries, which describe the role of Earth Sciences in society. Micol Todesco, researcher of the INGV-Section of Bologna, and Associated Editor of the AGU journal, JGR Solid Earth, contributed with the text "A leap in the dark: geological considerations on an unpredictable planet" (The leap in the dark: geological thoughts about an unpredictable planet, J. Geophys. Res. Solid Earth 122, doi:10.1002/2017JB014274). The Italian translation, courtesy of the AGU, will be available from 20 April.
