On Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March, the FAI Vesuvio Group will accompany visitors to discover the historic headquarters of the INGV Vesuvius Observatory

Belonging to the municipality of Ercolano and located in an elevated position, a few kilometers from the crater, the Real Vesuvius Observatory is located in an extraordinary landscape and geographical context, full of charm and history: from its terraces it is possible, in fact, to have all the Vesuvius territory at your feet (to get to see the Campi Flegrei, the Sorrento peninsula and the islands of the Gulf) and, at the same time, touch the effects of the different eruptive phases of Vesuvius.

Built by the will of Ferdinand II of Bourbon, the Real Observatory was founded in 1841, thus becoming the first and oldest volcanological institute in the world.

Located on the Salvatore hill - next to a small church and a hermitage that already offered shelter to those who ventured on the volcano in the 600s - it still represents today the historic headquarters of the Vesuvius Observatory, the Naples section of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), an avant-garde center for the study and monitoring of Campania volcanoes.

The historic site preserves a very important museum exhibition inside which there are numerous scientific instruments where it is possible, through multimedia installations, to realize the role played by Vesuvius and the various Italian volcanoes for our country.

Accompanied by the Apprentice Guides (involving the students of the "QOFlacco" Institute of Portici, classes 3G and 4M, and of the "Adriano Tilgher" Institute of Ercolano, classes 3ATT and 3BTT and by volunteers), the visit will lead visitors to discover a pearl of the Vesuvian area, recently reopened to the public after years of closure. It will be possible to immerse oneself in nature and experience one's own territory from a suggestive perspective, understand the scientific panorama of the time, learn about the biographies of the most illustrious personalities who worked there (such as, for example, Giuseppe Mercalli, creator of the scale for assessing the intensity of earthquakes), observe original scientific instruments unique in the world to finally be amazed by a magnificent collection of minerals and lava medals, a collection to be discovered. There will also be interventions by researchers who will reveal the scientific secrets of Vesuvius and the instruments present in the historic site, ready to satisfy any curiosity.
