Locating an earthquake and exploring the secrets of volcanoes through seismology and volcanology laboratories, educational tours and scientific cafés, learning about earthquakes and their effects, discovering how the two most active volcanoes in Italy, Etna and Stromboli, are monitored. These are just some of the initiatives organized by INGV for ScienzAperta, from 7 to 24 May. The offices of Rome, Catania and Palermo will participate in the event
From 7 to 24 May, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) opens its doors to the public with conferences, educational tours and screenings in its offices in Rome, Catania and Palermo. The occasion, "ScienzAperta – encounters with Planet Earth", now in its eighth edition.
Let's talk about Geophysics is the theme of the educational courses for schools, organized from Monday 7 to Friday 11 May, from 9.30 to 12.30, at the INGV headquarters in Rome. On Friday 11 May, children will be able to discover how to locate an earthquake and explore the secrets of volcanoes, through seismology and volcanology workshops, while the activities Volcanoes and Origami and Discovering Planet Earth: Giuseppa and the Dragon Tremotto are scheduled for the little ones (for children aged four to six). It will also be possible to visit the INGV seismic surveillance room. Friday's appointments will continue in the conference room, where the scientific café The Earth and its climate is scheduled: natural cycles and changes of anthropic origin with Aldo Winkler, INGV researcher. Following, concert by the MoroQtet musical group. For the Open Day, Saturday 12 May, guided tours, workshops for all ages and meetings will take place at the same time: from the laboratory A dip in the oceans, to the scientific café with Giancarlo Ciotoli who will talk about the European project LIFE – Breathe: a new proposal for the measurement and remediation of radon in confined spaces.

The Etna Observatory (OE), the Catania section of the INGV, also participates with seminars, screenings and educational tours. As scheduled, the mornings will be dedicated to school children, while in the afternoons it will be possible to attend the numerous meetings. It will start on Monday 7 May with the seminar Synergy between the Etna Park and INGV in scientific dissemination, curated by Stefano Branca, INGV researcher, in collaboration with the Etna Park. The video The evolution of Etna will be screened and, afterwards, we will talk about Fruition, environmental protection and research on the Lachea Island. The Etna 8 seminar will be held on Tuesday 1928 May. 90 years after the destruction of Mascali between volcanology, history and saints, while on Wednesday 9 there will be a double interview with Etna and Stromboli: history, activity and danger of the most active Italian volcanoes, with INGV-OE researchers. On Thursday 10 May, INGV researchers and volunteers from the national civil service will hold the seminar Cataloging, use and valorisation of the documentary and iconographic material of the Etna volcano: the Rittmann and Cucuzza collections. To conclude on Friday 11 May with the seminar 50 years after the Belice earthquake: reflections between science and the territory, organized by INGV researcher Raffaele Azzaro. During the days the photographic exhibition The 1928 eruption will be held in the weeklies of the time by the Mascali 1928 Association.

Rich program also for the INGV headquarters in Palermo: Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 May at the primary and secondary school "Istituto Comprensivo G. Vasi" in Corleone, 50 years after the earthquake in the Belice valley: what are earthquakes and how can we defend ourselves. We will talk about the planet's internal energy and the consequent terrestrial dynamics, deepening the effects related to seismic and volcanic activity. Wednesday 16 May, at the same school, I DO NOT RISK an earthquake lesson, What to do if an earthquake arrives and fun chemistry experiments. Thursday 17 May, at the "Thomas More" primary school in Palermo, Wednesday 23 May, at the "Minutoli" primary and kindergarten school in Palermo and Friday 25 May, at the "Istituto Comprensivo Karol Wojtyla" primary school in Belmonte Mezzagno (PA), lessons will be held on the seismic and volcanic activity of our country. It will be possible to observe a seismograph for recording seismic phenomena and a volcano model with simulation of the degassing processes of the magma chamber. On Thursday 17, Friday 18 and Saturday 19 May, INGV will participate in the event Legality and good practices: an antidote against the mafias which will take place in Misilmeri (PA). Saturday 19 May on the occasion of the XIV edition of the European Night of Museums 2018, the Geode Naturalistic Association and the Department of Earth and Sea Sciences - University of Palermo, will open the doors of the Museum of Mineralogy, offering guided tours of the collections and educational workshops for adults and children. On this occasion, the researchers of the Palermo branch of INGV will describe the seismic and volcanic activity of our country, what earthquakes are and how we can defend ourselves and the new research for volcanological monitoring to reduce risk. Finally, on Friday 18 and Saturday 24 May the students of the Istituto Superiore Majorana Tecnico Chemistry of Materials and Biotechnology will visit the chemistry laboratories at the INGV headquarters in Palermo.
