Interactive seminars, workshops and educational games to introduce the coastal communities of Thessaloniki to the problems related to sea level rise
After the appointments in the province of Matera, Thursday 14 and Friday 15 April SAVEMEDCOASTS-2 arrives in Greece, in the coastal plain of Chalastra, for the fourth appointment of the 'KnowRiskFlood' scientific dissemination campaign aimed at students and teachers of the High School of Echedoros (Kalochori) and stakeholder locals.
The events, organized byNational Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), From 'Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and by 'ISOTECH of Cyprus, have the objective of increasing awareness of coastal communities on the phenomenon and consequences of sea level rise and on the need to intervene in this regard, identifying specific needs to develop applicable and sustainable solutions.
INGV and AUTH experts will involve students with educational games and interactive seminars to stimulate discussions and reflections on sea level rise and to understand what is happening along the coasts of Chalastra and Kalochori and what can still be done to mitigate the future effects of the phenomenon.
The meeting with the stakeholder will be held on Friday 15 April in the spaces of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and, through a participatory decision support method devised by ISOTECH, based on the study of perception by the population residing in coastal areas, will have the aim of supporting decision manager in the development of specific solutions for the mitigation of sea level rise through risk awareness and adaptation policies.
The area of the coastal plain of Chalastra, near Thessaloniki, on the Aegean Sea, is characterized by the presence of the deltas of the rivers Axios, Aliakmones, Loudias and Gallikos. It is a UNESCO protected site, home to the Axios-Loudias-Aliakmonas National Park, a wetland with rich biodiversity and a source of life for migratory birds.
SAVEMEDCOASTS-2 turned its attention to this plain and the Kalochori lagoon, at its northeastern edge, as here the effect of sea level rise is amplified by the slow subsidence of the land, a phenomenon known as "subsidence". In fact, the lagoon itself was formed following the subsidence which, starting from the seventies, lowered the soil to an altitude of about 3-4 meters below sea level due to the extraction of groundwater for the water supply of Thessaloniki, built at the time without an eco-sustainable vision and perspective.
