Seminars, workshops and games to make the coastal communities of the province of Matera aware of the problems of sea level rise
Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 March SAVEMEDCOASTS-2 returns to Metaponto and Bernalda, in the province of Matera, for the third event of the 'KnowRiskFlood' scientific dissemination campaign aimed at middle school students and teachers of the Istituto Comprensivo "Pitagora" of Bernalda, as well as stakeholder locals.
The appointments, organized by theIstituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and ISOTECH of Cyprus, with the support of partners at the Centre for Integrated Geomorphology for the Mediterranean Area (CGIAM) and the Basilicata Environment Research Foundation (FARBAS), aim to inform coastal communities of the latest scientific knowledge regarding the causes and effects of sea level rise, increasing public awareness of the phenomenon.
The INGV team of experts will involve students with educational games and interactive seminars to stimulate discussions and reflections on sea level rise and to understand what is happening along the Metapontine coast and what can still be done to mitigate the future effects of the phenomenon.
Friday 25 March, moreover, will be held on workshop “Adaptation to climate change of the Ionian agricultural and coastal areas of Basilicata”, organized by the University of Basilicata, in collaboration with the researchers of SAVEMEDCOASTS-2, the Order of Geologists of Basilicata, the Order of Doctors of Agronomy and Doctors of Forestry of the Province of Matera. The event will take place at the Magna Grecia Hotel Village in Metaponto Lido and will be attended by stakeholder and exponents of the academic world, research, associations and the agricultural sector.
The adoption of a participatory decision support method developed by ISOTECH, based on the study of perception by the population residing in coastal areas, aims to support decision manager in the development of specific solutions for the mitigation of sea level rise through constantly updated risk awareness and adaptation policies.
