With an event in memory of Guglielmo Marconi and his 1932 radio experiment, the INGV Geophysical Museum of Rocca di Papa reopens to the public
Thursday 11 August theNational Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) will reopen the doors of his Geophysical Museum at the Castelli Romani, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Guglielmo Marconi's experiment which united Rocca di Papa (in the province of Rome) with Golfo Aranci (in the province of Sassari).
The event, organized by INGV in collaboration with the Municipality of Rocca di Papa, will remember the experiment that in 1932 allowed Marconi to connect the Italian peninsula with Sardinia by radio, using short waves.
"August 11th will be an evening dedicated to science and conviviality for us" explains the curator of the INGV Geophysical Museum of Rocca di Papa, Fawzi Doumaz. “We have chosen this anniversary as the date for the reopening of the Museum to remember and celebrate a historic day for Italian research. Our Headquarters has been and will be the subject of important recovery and reorganization interventions with the aim of making the most of the exhibition spaces and visitor itineraries. The hope is to involve citizens and students of the area more and more, to make the Museum an increasingly participatory and inclusive space".
In addition to the INGV representatives, the Mayor of Rocca di Papa, Veronica Cimino, and the mayor of Golfo Aranci, Mario Mulas, will take part in the event.
"The reopening of the Geophysical Museum of Rocca di Papa renews the fruitful and lasting collaboration between INGV and the Municipality of the Castelli Romani", underlines the President of INGV Carlo Doglioni. “The Museum is a point of reference for the dissemination of geosciences in an area like this, located on the active volcano of the Colli Albani, where INGV will continue to be present to monitor all the seismic and volcanic parameters of the area and to disseminate citizenship and schools a more aware culture of the territory and the related natural risks, helping to raise awareness and train citizens".
During the inauguration event, the "Livio Gratton" astronomical park will place three telescopes on the terrace of the Museum to observe the celestial vault accompanied by the music of Paolo Valbonesi. Furthermore, during the evening, a laser beam will be directed towards Golfo Aranci to illuminate the "route" that Marconi's radio waves traveled almost a century ago towards the Sardinian city.
“It is a pleasure to inaugurate the restart of INGV activities at the Geophysical Museum of Rocca di Papa with an evening like this”, declares Mayor Veronica Cimino. “Since the beginning of our mandate we have worked to restore prestige to this structure, for which the Municipality has a feeling of affection both for its cultural value and for its innate ability to be an enviable tourist centre. Finally we put a very important first stone in the long journey that awaits us together ".
