The central theme of the eighth edition of the Festival of Science and Philosophy is The Adventure of Man: from which past, towards which future. A cycle of conferences on seismology, the environment and volcanoes to understand what we know and what we still have to learn. This and more will be presented by the INGV experts in Foligno from 26 to 29 April
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) will be present with 7 conferences at the VIII edition of the "Festa di Scienza e Filosofia - Virtute e Canoscienza" (Foligno 26 - 29 April). The adventure of Man: from which past, towards which future is the theme of the event which will focus on the challenges faced in the past and on the objectives still to be achieved, in order to be able to know and be able to describe the physical laws that govern natural phenomena .
The INGV party will be opened on Saturday 28 April by the conference Can earthquakes be predicted? by INGV physicist and researcher Antonio Piersanti who will analyze the state of knowledge and prospects for research aimed at predicting earthquakes. Also on Saturday 28 April, the INGV seismologists Giovanna Cultrera, Maria Grazia Ciaccio and Lucia Margheriti will talk about how the recent history of intuitions, discoveries and seismological analysis methods can help to understand the earthquake phenomenon, within the conference What earthquakes teach us ? When the past helps to discover the future. Following this, again on Saturday 28 April, the director of the Volcano Department of INGV, Augusto Neri, will present Vulcani: what we know and what we still have to learn, a journey between the past and the future of research and the methods used to learn about volcanoes, their precursors and their destructive manifestations. (http://www.festascienzafilosofia.it/events/augusto-neri-vulcani-cosa-abbiamo-imparato-cosa-dobbiamo-imparare/)
Another 4 appointments with INGV, Sunday 29 April: Daniela Pantosti, director of the Earthquake Department, will begin with Earthquake Geology: unforeseen events that shouldn't come as a surprise. Thanks to the study of traces left by seismic events in the past, it is possible to tell the evolution of the deformation of the earth's surface over time, to understand how and where new seismic events may occur. Alessandro Amato, head of the INGV Mediterranean Tsunami Alert Center, will continue with the presentation of his book Under our feet: stories of earthquakes, scientists and charlatans, finalist at the Galileo Literary Prize for scientific dissemination 2017. In addition to earthquakes and volcanoes, the terrestrial environment is also monitored and studied through geophysical techniques; with Geophysics for the Environment: what we have learned, what we still have to learn, Leonardo Sagnotti, director of the INGV Environment Department, will talk about magnetic storms, pollution of the atmosphere, water and soil and much more. (http://www.festascienzafilosofia.it/events/leonardo-sagnotti-la-geofisica-per-ambiente-cosa-abbiamo-imparato-cosa-dobbiamo-ancora-imparare/)
The series of presentations, branded INGV, will be concluded by Carlo Doglioni, President of INGV, with the conference Gradients of the Earth and beyond: how it is possible to measure the variation of the forces present within our planet and how these influence the times and ways in which it manifests its energy? The President of INGV, the main Italian research body for the study of geosciences, will answer these questions and many others.
