The historic site in Grottaminarda (AV) officially becomes a Section of the Institute dedicated to seismic and geodetic monitoring and scientific development on geophysical topics

With the event "Research that makes a network", the Irpinia Section of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology will be inaugurated on 4 October
(INGV). Located in Grottaminarda, in the province of Avellino, the headquarters was founded in 2002 as a branch and point of reference of INGV for seismological research and seismic engineering in a territory, that of Irpinia, repeatedly hit by strong earthquakes, such as the one of 23 November 1980.

October 4 will be a day dedicated to confrontation and discussion with some scientific realities of the Centre-South, to the mission of the Section, to the infrastructural projects in which it is involved and to its prospects.
The Grottaminarda section was the first INGV site to have embarked on a path towards total energy self-sufficiency, in line with the indications of the Paris Agreement on climate change (COP21).

The President of INGV Carlo Doglioni will speak at the inaugural event, underlining: “The inauguration of the Irpinia Section is an important one for the Institute moment of growth and scientific development, fundamental for deepening research activity in the geosciences and for strengthening the relationship with the territory through the implementation of monitoring and surveillance networks, as well as initiatives for training and scientific dissemination aimed at citizens. The southern Apennines have important natural fragilities that need to be better studied, also to guarantee a science that is constantly at the service of the population".

In addition to the development and management of the RSN (National Seismic Network) and of the RING (National Integrated Network GNSS), an activity carried out in collaboration with other INGV Sections, the staff of the Irpinia Section is responsible for the acquisition, archiving and distribution all The entire scientific community of the geodetic data acquired participates in the national seismic surveillance service, collaborates with the different INGV Emergency Groups, engaging in the installation of emergency networks in the epicentral areas of earthquakes that affect the national territory, carries out micro-zoning studies seismic and site effects.

"Our Section has been working for years with the aim of consolidating itself as a scientific and technological center of reference for Central-Southern Italy”, adds Annamaria Vicari, Director of the Irpinia Section. “In fact, the activities carried out in our centers play a fundamental role in the seismic and geodetic monitoring of the territory thanks to the development and management of the National Seismic Network in the South. We support this research and development activities on different geophysical topics mainly within the Earthquakes Department, but also with repercussions on the Environment and Volcanoes".

The inauguration of the Irpinia Section will be introduced by institutional greetings brought by INGV President Carlo Doglioni, INGV General Manager Jair Lorenco and BioGeM President Ortensio Zecchino who in 1999, as Minister of Scientific Research, signed the founding decree of INGV .
