INGV is once again the protagonist of ICGG15, the international congress on the geochemistry of gases in which the leading experts in the sector meet to take stock of the latest research in the exclusive setting of the Castle of Milazzo
Back to Italy after 14 yearsICGG15 - International Conference of Gas Geochemistry, the international conference held for the first time in France in 1982 which attracts experts from all over the world to present and discuss the latest research and technological advances relating to the geochemistry of gases in the volcanic, seismic and environmental fields.
Firsta edition of the Conference, kicking off at the Palermo headquarters of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and scheduled until 5 October in the thirteenth-century Castle of Milazzo (ME), is organized by the Palermo section of the Institute and also sponsored by UNESCO, the Sicilian Region, the Sicilian Regional Assembly and the Municipality of Milazzo.
"The ICGG is a highly prestigious international forum in which moments of scientific communication are combined with intense exchanges between researchers from all over the world", explains Franco Italiano, Director of the Palermo Section of INGV, "The fundamental objective it is to stimulate growth and progress in the field of gas geochemistry, favoring the international and interdisciplinary exchange of information and thus supporting cooperation between research institutes and the industrial world".
The topics that will be addressed during the work of the ICGG15 will range from geodynamic, volcanic and petroleum contexts to the marine and submarine environment, to arrive at the atmosphere, groundwater, water resources, up to the geomedicine and geochemistry of gases in crystalline rocks .
At the beginning of the works, a scientific collaboration agreement has already been signed between the Palermo Section of INGV and the Institute of Earthquake Forecasting of China Earthquake Administration (IEF-CEA) for the development of activities aimed at studying fluids in seismologically active, with research activities in selected areas in Italy and China.
"In parallel with the Conference", continues Italiano, "in the spaces of the Mastio (i.e. the highest part of the Castle of Milazzo) intra-congress events are scheduled and some exhibitions are set up, including the one on the 1968 Belice earthquake, the Messina earthquake in 1908, on the environment and health by the CISAS project of the CNR (National Research Council), on hydrothermalism and on the IDMAR project (Multidisciplinary laboratory on the sea)".
Furthermore, the Steering Committee of the Italy-Malta "BESS" project will meet during the event (Pocket Beach Management & Remote Surveillance System) in the presence of colleagues from the Universities of Messina, Palermo and Malta, from the Italian and Maltese Foreign Ministries and from the Maltese and Sicilian administrations. It is a project co-financed by the European Union (European Regional Development Fund, under the Italy-Malta PO 2014-2020) with the aim of drawing up a Management Manual useful for planning interventions in favor of the marine-coastal areas of the countries involved.
Finally, a further round table is envisaged which will involve INGV and ISPRA (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research), with the participation of the ARPA (Regional Agencies for Environmental Protection) adhering to the agreement. The central theme will be the study of hydro-geochemical monitoring models for the integrated analysis of geological hazards.
