The first meeting of the RETRACE-3D (centRal italy EarThquakes integRAted Crustal modEl) project was held today in Rome, at the Civil Protection Department, aimed at the three-dimensional geological and seismotectonic characterization of the volume of the earth's crust which, starting August 24, 2016, was affected by the seismic sequence that hit central Italy.
The project, which has a renewable duration of one year, is the result of a collaboration between the Department of Civil Protection, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the National Research Council - which participates with the Institute of Geology Environmental and Geoengineering (CNR-IGAG) and the Institute for Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment (CNR-IREA) -, and the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), with the collaboration of Eni and Total, both private companies but also part of the National Civil Protection Service, which have made their underground data available.
RETRACE-3D therefore represents an example of virtuous collaboration between civil protection, the scientific community and the private sector, on objectives of common interest for the country, in particular with the aim of obtaining a high quality reconstruction of the possible seismogenic sources present in that sector of crust and a 3D distribution of the different types of rocks in the subsoil, which allows a more precise localization of earthquakes. To these aims are added other more strictly scientific ones, such as the development of dynamic models bound by satellite-type data, and insights into possible future applications, for example in the field of seismic micro-zoning studies.
The kick-off meeting was attended by the top management of the project promoters and representatives of Eni, Total and the General Directorate for Safety, also environmental, of mining and energy activities (DGS-UNMIG) of the Ministry of Economic Development, as well as representatives of the Large Risks.
