The first network of the MEGLIO Project is operational, which detects seismic movements with the optical fiber installed by Open Fiber

Thursday 21 October, starting at 12:00 in the spaces of Palazzo Guiderocchi in Ascoli Piceno, the press conference to present the first results of the BETTER project, developed by Open Fiber, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the National Institute of Metrological Research (INRiM) and Bain & Company.
BETTER is an experimental system with high technological innovation created to detect earthquakes by exploiting the optical fiber installed on the national territory by Open Fiber.
Indeed, by applying a particular laser sensor designed and built by INRiM to the optical fiber, it was possible to develop and fine-tune an innovative seismic detection system. After two years of laboratory experimentation, the first results obtained on the optical fibers installed from Ascoli Piceno to Teramo will be presented during the press conference.
INGV with its scientific support and all its own expertise in monitoring and recording seismic events in the area, it compares directly and in real time the signals recorded by the optical fiber network with those provided by the seismic stations of its National Seismic Network.
While the INGV seismic stations distributed throughout the country offer point detection, this new technique mimics the functioning of a "nervous system" being able to detect seismic movements along the entire monitored section.
The President of INGV Carlo Doglioni will participate in the press conference of the MEGLIO Project alongside the President of the Marche Region Francesco Acquaroli, the Councilor for Budget and IT of the Abruzzo Region Guido Liris, the President of INRiM Diederik Sybolt Wiersma and the Director of External Relations of Open Fiber Andrea Falessi.
The institutional greetings will be followed by the presentation of the Project and the first results obtained, as well as a visit to the POP (Point of Presence) where it will be possible to touch the new monitoring system first-hand.
