The eighth edition of the "I don't risk" campaign begins: volunteers and citizens take to the streets to learn more about the natural risks deriving from earthquakes, floods and tidal waves
"I don't risk - Good civil protection practices" returns to the squares of Italy on 13 and 14 October, on the occasion of the UN International Day for Disaster Reduction. The initiative is promoted by the Civil Protection Department (DPC) with the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the National Association of Public Assistance (ANPAS), the Network of University Seismic Engineering Laboratories (ReLUIS), the Cima Foundation, the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS), the Interregional Agency for the Po River (AiPo), the Arpa Emilia-Romagna, the Basin Authority of the Arno River, the University of Calabria (CamiLab) and the Research Institute for Hydrogeological Protection of the National Research Council (CNR-IRPI).
The information campaign was created with the aim of promoting the active role of citizens in reducing natural risks and involves over 300 Italian squares with around 3.400 Civil Protection volunteers who will welcome citizens at the information points over the weekend, informing them on what to do first , during and after a seismic event, a flood or a tidal wave.
“INGV”, explains INGV President Carlo Doglioni, “as a research body, is engaged in the study of the mechanisms underlying calamitous events and in the continuous monitoring of the national territory. Indeed, it is thanks to the close collaboration with the Civil Protection Department (DPC) and the sharing of information in real time that the Institute proposes itself as a useful point of reference for citizens, not only in emergency situations".
INGV, as promoter of the event, has actively contributed to the production of information material and interactive maps, published on the portal www.iononrischio.it. On the occasion of this edition, the two interactive maps of Earthquakes of the past and of recent Seismicity have been reworked, inserting a new function, the "Time Slider", which allows you to obtain visualizations of seismicity personalized according to different time intervals and an animation of the space-time trend of seismicity.
“The permanent conflict between memory and oblivion can lead man to lower his guard against natural hazards”, continues the INGV President. “It is therefore necessary to promote awareness and prevention activities, with particular attention to schools. Explaining to children the dynamics of the Earth and the natural hazards we can be subject to will make them aware adults. This is where we should start."
The complete list of Italian squares affected by the initiative is available on the official campaign webpage, http://iononrischio.protezionecivile.it/io-non-rischio/dove-si-svolge/, where you can also find further information and promotional material. New this year, the involvement of an additional square in Scutari, Albania, where the Cima Foundation will illustrate to the population the good practices in support of the hydrogeological risk reduction activity.
To support the campaign via social media, the promoters of the event have launched the official hashtag of the event, #iononrischio2018. The goal is to use a viral platform like Twitter to increase the mobilization and bring citizens to the streets.
