Scientific laboratories, meetings, conferences, demonstrations, shows and much more at Futuro Remoto, the scientific culture event organized by the Città della Scienza which will be held from 25 to 28 May in Naples, in Piazza del Plebiscito. INGV is also participating with a rich program of activities

Futuro Remoto is underway, the initiative promoted by Città della Scienza together with the seven universities of the Campania Region and the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) which for thirty years has brought citizens, especially young people and students, closer to science and technological innovation. The 2017 edition, which will be held in Piazza del Plebiscito from 25 to 28 May, is dedicated to the theme of Connections, to underline the desire to encourage dialogue between the different cultural, scientific and technological realities, pooling knowledge to make “network”, to innovate, create and share information.

Among those present, also the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) which, for the occasion, presents a rich program of appointments: from the processes at the origin of earthquakes and volcanoes up to seismic and volcanic monitoring and surveillance both on the national territory and locally, through seismic instruments and multimedia material.

On 25 May, from 12.30 to 13.30, in the Conference Room of the Royal Palace, Gianluca Valensise, INGV seismologist, will hold the seminar The central Apennines earthquakes of 2016-2017: still an extraordinary and unexpected phenomenon? where the seismic sequence that hit central Italy starting from 24 August 2016 will be analysed, taking stock of the situation on what happened in the light of the knowledge available before the earthquake and on the social and economic implications of the tragic events. The INGV expert will explore the connections between the remarkable results achieved by seismological research in the last three decades and the possibility of mitigating the risk in seismic areas of our country.

On 26 May, from 17.00 to 18.00, at the Navy Officers' Club, a Scientific Café is scheduled where Francesca Bianco, director of the Vesuvius Observatory (INGV-OV), will talk about the characteristics and dangers of Campania volcanoes, but also of volcanic monitoring actions, essential, in a risk mitigation framework, for the definition of information useful for establishing the state of the individual volcano.

On 28 May, from 12.30 to 13.30, in the Sala Sirignano of the Circolo Artistico Politecnico, Giovanni Romeo, head of the New Technologies and Tools Laboratory of the INGV, will give the speech Boldly go where no man wants to go, focused on the use of drones for geophysical surveys. With the aim of using remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) to safely perform operations that could endanger human operators, the expert will give a general overview of the RPAS and will talk about his experience at the New Technologies Laboratory and INGV tools in the construction and use of geophysical instruments for use on drones. As an application example, the expert will talk about LuSi, (Lumpur Sidoarjo, the mud of Sidoarjo), the gigantic hydrothermal event on the island of Java in Indonesia, which was explored using a specially equipped drone.
