The 15th Meeting of the Group of Senior Officials (GSO) on Global Research Infrastructures (GRI) will be held in Naples on Monday 16 and Tuesday 9 May. The event will be hosted jointly by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station (SZN), representing the Italian Government. The Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) will be represented by Prof. Luigi Nicolais, scientific adviser to the Minister. The two research institutions hosting the event actively participate, also with coordination tasks, in some research infrastructures included in the ESFRI Roadmap (European Strategic Forum on Research Infrastructures) strategic for Europe in the field of Earth sciences: in particular , EPOS European Plate Observing Systems, EMSO European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory and EMBRC European Marine Biological Research Center.
The GSO was established in 2008 by the G8+5 to enable the creation of an open, non-binding forum for exchange on the development and management of global research infrastructures and has since developed a collaborative framework that includes a definition of Global Research Infrastructure (GRI).
The GSO is currently exploring collaboration opportunities between numerous research infrastructures around the world that have demonstrated the maturity to potentially become Global Research Infrastructures (GRIs).
During the meeting scheduled in Naples, the GSO will analyze five Case Studies concerning initiatives for the development of large research infrastructures based on international cooperation principles and will discuss the policies for sharing and managing data and the services offered by these infrastructures through open access principles, scientific and technological innovation, and guidelines for access based on competitive principles of excellence. The progress of the GSO's activities will form part of the report that the G7 Research Ministers will discuss at their meeting scheduled for September in Turin.

The 9th Meeting of the Group of Senior Officials (GSO) on Global Research Infrastructures (GRI) will be held on 15-16 May 2017 in Naples, Italy. The Meeting is jointly hosted by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station (SZN) on behalf of the Italian government. The Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research will be represented by the scientific Counselor of the Minister, Prof. Luigi Nicolais. The two hosting research organizations actively participate, also with a coordinating role, in Research Infrastructures of the ESFRI Roadmap, namely the European Plate Observing Systems (EPOS), the European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory (EMSO) and European Marine Biological Research Center (EMBRC).
The GSO was set up in 2008 by the G8+5 to establish a non-binding and open forum for policy exchanges on global research infrastructures and since then it has developed a collaboration framework including a definition of Global Research Infrastructure (GRI). The Group is now exploring collaboration opportunities of a number of large research infrastructure initiatives that have demonstrated a significant level of maturity towards becoming potential GRIs.
During the 9th Meeting, the GSO will evaluate the analysis of five Case Studies of large research infrastructure initiatives based on application of the principles of the collaboration framework and will discuss policy issues concerning sharing and management of data, open innovation and global excellent-driven access of GRIs.
The progress on the activities of the GSO will also be reported at the G7 Science Ministers' meeting that will take place in September 2017 in Turin, Italy.
