On 23 June 2024, coinciding with the increase in volcanic tremor, an increase in the emission of fragments of fluid lava was observed (spattering) from the northernmost mouth (N1) of the crater terrace of the Stromboli volcano.
This phenomenon was followed by a series of lava overflows along the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco, causing an intense rolling of blocks up to the coastline.
The phenomenon was accompanied by a large deformation of the upper portion of the Sciara del Fuoco, detected by the GBINSAR measurements conducted by the Center for Civil Protection of the University of Florence (UNIFI-CPC). These measurements indicate the possibility of collapses of large volumes of rock along the Sciara del Fuoco.
As a result of these activities, on the evening of Monday 24 June 2024 the Department of Civil Protection (DPC) has ordered, for the Stromboli volcano, the transition from the yellow level to the orange level.
Raising the alert determines the strengthening of the volcano monitoring system and the information connection between the scientific community and the other components and operational structures of the National Civil Protection Service.
For more information, please refer to Press release published by the DPC and to the page dedicated to state of activity of Stromboli within the website of INGV Aeolian Monitoring Center (CME).
