A day in Rome dedicated to the project of conservation and valorization of the national historical-scientific heritage with a public digital database on seismology and meteorology useful for the study of solutions for the mitigation of future risks and for studies of the history of science.
The next 17 March, At the Conference Hall of the Central State Archives the event will be held in Rome "The Central State Archives' documentation for the INGV's Polo and Catalogue of Strong Earthquakes in Italy projects: disciplinary history and science".
The event marks a further step forward for the conservation of the Italian scientific heritage within the framework of the project Italian Historical Documentary Center of Seismology and Meteorology, launched last year by theIstituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) in collaboration with the Museo galileo of Florence with the aim of creating a public and centralized digital archive of seismic and meteorological documents.
Italy boasts a long tradition of scientific observation of seismic and meteorological phenomena, which began in the 17th century with the first meteorological network in Florence and continued in the 18th century with the first instruments for recording earthquakes.
This centuries-old activity has produced a vast amount of scientific documentation: seismic and meteorological recordings, bulletins, registers, and correspondence, preserved in the spaces of institutions such as the INGV itself and the Council for Agricultural Research and Analysis of Agricultural Economics (CREA). However, some of this valuable documentation, housed in smaller institutions and organizations, has been lost over the years.
The Historical Documentation Center was created precisely to prevent further losses and, at the same time, enhance the data we possess in order to reconstruct historical series, which are essential for understanding the past and mitigating present and future risks from extreme natural events.
Over the last 35 years, the INGV Tròmos and SISMOS projects have already surveyed and digitized over 200.000 historical seismograms, 25.000 letters e 100.000 pages of documents: all this material (only partially currently available online) will be made available for consultation through a database open access.
The appointment on March 17th will see the participation of Fabio Florindo, President of INGV, John Torre, Director General of INGV, Maria Letizia Sagù, Delegate Head of the Central State Archives, Antonio Tarasco, Director General of Archives, Robert Ferrari, Executive Director of the Galileo Museum, Salvatore Stramondo, Director of the Earthquake Department of the INGV, Maria Chiara Zaganelli, General Director of CREA, and Joseph Corti, Director of the Agriculture and Environmental Research Centre of CREA.
The event will start at 9:30 am and will be free to enter. until all available places are filled: during the day participants will also be able to visit a small exhibition of tools and documents of seismology and meteorology of the INGV, CREA and the Central State Archives.
