In the edition of the Science Festival dedicated to changes, INGV presents an exhibition on Plate Tectonics, the true engine of our Planet, at the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa from 25 October to 4 November

Accompany the public on a journey that traces the history of the very first observations on the shape and composition of the Earth up to the enunciation of the theory of continental drift, passing through the fundamental contribution offered by scientific discoveries from the dawn of seismology up to today. This is the objective of the exhibition The Planet of Changes - Plate tectonics: history and implications of a revolutionary theory, set up by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa (Piazza Matteotti, 9) and open to the public from 25 October to 4 November on the occasion of the sixteenth edition of the Science Festival.

“Visitors”, explains Giuliana D'Addezio, INGV researcher, “through a route organized according to a timeline, will be able to retrace the fundamental steps and the discoveries that led to the enunciation of the theory of plate tectonics. This Theory", continues the researcher, "is recognized as one of the most important scientific revolutions of the XNUMXth century, as it laid the foundations for the transition from the vision of a static planet to the awareness of living on an extremely dynamic planet, remodeled by tectonics ” by explaining apparently irreconcilable phenomena affecting the earth's crust and which are closely connected to what happens inside our planet, such as, for example, seismic activity, the spatial distribution of volcanoes, the formation of ocean trenches, the position and the shape of the continents”.

The exhibition will be inaugurated on Thursday 25 October on the occasion of the Science Festival, the annual appointment with researchers, enthusiasts, schools and families aimed at spreading scientific culture at an international level, which in the previous edition involved over 3 million visitors.

“To make the itinerary more effective and interactive”, continues the researcher, “didactic scientific exhibits have been created, in particular a play station on the expansion of ocean floors and a backlit sphere for the reconstruction of the movements of the plates in the geological eras. By following paths defined by colors, visitors will also be able to learn about the most recent research on the dynamics of the Earth, also carried out by INGV. The itinerary of the exhibition will end with a look beyond Planet Earth, to discover what we know about the dynamics of other planets”, concludes Giuliana D'Addezio.

The exhibition, set up in the Sottoporticato of the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, will be open to visitors for the entire duration of the Festival, from 25 October to 4 November, from Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 17.00 (Saturdays, holidays and 2 November from 10.00 to 19.00).
