INGV and NIED sign agreement for natural hazard research and mitigation
The Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) has been signed between the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) based in Japan. The agreement was signed by the President of INGV, Fabio Florindo, and by the President of NIED, Kaoru Takara, in the presence of the directors of the INGV departments and monitoring sections, the heads of NIED, and the representatives, for Italy, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) and, for Japan, of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
The agreement is aimed at promote the exchange of information and the development of joint research activities in the fields of seismology, volcanology and environmental studies, through the sharing of data and expertise, the implementation of laboratory experiments, and the exchange and training of personnel. The aim of the MoC is to develop and disseminate theories and technologies that contribute to the mitigation of natural disasters and the sustainable development of the Earth's environment.
"We express great satisfaction with the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between our Institute and the NIED – declared the President of INGV, Fabio Florindo - This partnership consolidates a synergistic approach in the important exchange and sharing activities in the field of geosciences, strengthening a significant scientific collaboration between Italy and Japan.".
The agreement confirms the commitment of the two Institutes to valorising scientific research as a fundamental tool for reducing the risk of natural disasters, in order to increasingly protect the communities and territories that host them.
