The Minister of University and Research (MUR) Anna Maria Bernini has appointed Fabio Florindo as the new President of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV)
With a career of high international prestige and proven scientific leadership, Fabio Florindo prepares to lead theINGV with an eye on excellence and innovation, further consolidating the Institute's position as a global point of reference in the field of Geosciences.
Graduated in Geological Sciences and with a PhD in Geophysics from the University of Southampton (UK), he has held roles of increasing responsibility within INGV, where he is currently Research Director.
"My commitment will be to strengthen INGV with concrete actions that consolidate its role of scientific excellence at a global level.”, declares Florindo. “Among my priorities there is undoubtedly the strengthening of monitoring networks, with the adoption of cutting-edge technologies for an increasingly timely response to natural risks.".
Through interdisciplinary projects and strategic international collaborations, INGV aims to address global challenges related to climate change and tectonic and volcanic processes.

Research associate at ISMAR-CNR and at Centro Oceanográfico de Registro Estratigráfico of the University of São Paulo, Brazil, since 2022 Florindo has been part of the Board of Directors of INGV and has held the position of interim President, demonstrating management skills, competence and vision.
Florindo is a well-known geophysicist in the international scene with a significant scientific career in the field of geophysics. He is Principal Investigator of several international research projects of great importance, including the ANDRILL project, which involved institutions from Italy, Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. His high scientific production includes works in top-level journals and he is recognized for the significant impact he has had on global research.
At an international level, Florindo has been awarded numerous prizes and recognitions. TheAmerican Geophysical Union (AGU) awarded him for his contribution to the scientific community and elected him Fellow of the AGU. He is a member of the Academia Europaea and has received the title of Doctor of Science from the University of Southampton for his significant contribution to geophysical research. In addition, his contribution to the scientific research programme in Antarctica was recognised with the National Science Foundation Antarctic Service Medal, a major honor from the American program for service in the region.
