On the morning of 19 April 2020, an episode of Strombolian activity and modest lava fountains occurred at the New South-East Crater of Etna, accompanied by ash emission.
This activity began around 09:15 (local time), and generated a plume of steam and ash that rose up to 5 km above sea level.
The wind pushed the eruptive cloud towards the eastern sectors of the volcano: between the villages of Zafferana Etnea (south-eastern slope) and Linguaglossa (north-eastern slope), there were light falls of fine ash.
The activity involved one or two vents in the area of the "saddle cone", which was formed in the spring of 2017. No lava flows were observed.
At 13:00, the activity of the New Southeast Crater was substantially concluded, while the Strombolian and effusive activity at the Voragine crater, which has been underway since 12 September 2019, now continues without significant changes.
The INGV Observatory of Etna monitored the activity also through site inspections by sampling the erupted products to be analyzed in the laboratory.
In this period of COVID-19 emergency, INGV guarantees the full operation of its seismic, volcanic and seaquake warning rooms in Rome, Naples and Catania and the availability of emergency groups, in absolute safety for all those who work there .
