Three days dedicated to the scientific, artistic and human story of volcanoes, with particular attention to the Sicilian ones and to the activities that the INGV carries out for their continuous monitoring and surveillance
From the 27 to the 29 JuneIn the historic center of Trecastagni (CT), the third edition of the will take place Volcano Festival - Etna 2025, the review that intertwines science, culture, theatre and popularisation to tell the story of the world's volcanoes, their activities and the creativity they are capable of generating.
The event, organized by Trecastagni Foundation Etna Heritage and directed by the Sicilian popularizer Joseph Riggio, is sponsored by National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Department of Tourism of the Sicilian Region, Sicilian Regional Assembly (ARS), Municipality of Trecastagni e Italian Association of Volcanology (AIV).
This year's edition, entitled “Unforgettable Lands”, includes a program full of initiatives: an unmissable opportunity to discover the natural phenomena that govern volcanoes , human dimension which, through culture, tradition and knowledge of the territory, is hidden behind them.
There will also be a presence for the entire duration of the Festival stand curated by the Etna Observatory of the INGV where enthusiasts and the curious will be able to discover some of the monitoring instruments used by researchers.

An Introduction to Volcanism and Volcanic Activity on Earth
Seminar promoted by AIV with the participation of university professors and experts in the sector
Interview with Etna
Experiment of participatory theatre with texts by Giuseppe Riggio: the actress Maria Rita Sgarlato lends her voice to Nature, interviewed by Alberto Abbadessa, with the intervention of an ironic social choir
Homage to Franco Battiato
Rita Botto reinterprets the lyrics of the singer-songwriter from Catania dedicated to Etna
The Aetna
The INGV presents the first Italian translation of the second volume of the work by Wolfgang Sartorius von Waltershausen and Arnold von Lasaulx, produced by Edizioni dell'Istituto and edited by Stefano Branca and Luigi Ingaliso, to celebrate the 145th anniversary of the publication of the work, a document of great importance for the history of volcanology
Meeting with the INGV Etna Observatory
The researcher of the Catania section of the INGV, Eugenio Privitera, illustrates to the public the early warning systems of active volcanoes, with a particular focus on the very current examples of Etna and Stromboli
Story about Volcanic Lands
A testimony dedicated to Pantelleria, with a multi-voiced dialogue between Antonietta Valenza, a writer and teacher from Pantelleria, Francesco Ciancitto, a guide of the Pantelleria Island National Park, and Marco Marcialis, wine educator
Documentary “Mother Stone”
Screening of the work by Daniele Greco and Mauro Maugeri, a poetic tale about the identity and memory that the earth preserves
At the end of the event, Sunday 29 June at 20am, will be screened in national preview the documentary “While everything moves. The volcanological observatory of Pizzi Deneri”, directed by Pasquale Marino and produced by the INGV PNRR-MEET project, coordinated by Giulio Selvaggi.
Through photos, archive footage and testimonies of the protagonists, the documentary film tells the difficult construction of the Pizzi Deneri Observatory, built on the northern side of Etna between 1975 and 1978 at 2.818 metres above sea level. The Observatory, a two-domed structure built using the technique Binishell by architect Dante Bini, is the spearhead of the complex monitoring and surveillance system of Etna carried out by the Etna Observatory of the INGV.
