The agreement strengthens technical and scientific collaboration for territorial security.

The collaboration agreement between the Councilor for Territory and Environment of the Sicilian Region was signed, Elena Pagana, and the President of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Carlo Doglioni, an agreement which reflects an already consolidated synergy between the two bodies and which thanks to this will benefit from greater effectiveness and interactivity in collaborative relationships.

A synergy of a technical, operational, scientific and institutional nature: the agreement places the focus on prevention through the study and determination of the causes of calamitous phenomena, the identification of dangerous scenarios and the identification of the areas of the territory subject to the various risks (hydrogeological, hydraulic, seismic, volcanological, forest fires, etc.).

INGV brings to the table an experience of high scientific and technological value: “We have been working on this protocol for months and we do it with great enthusiasm,” underlines the Councilor for Territory and Environment of the Sicilian Region, ElenaPagana, “an enthusiasm resulting from the collaborations that already exist in our territory. Experiences with the Palermo headquarters, the presence in the archipelago of the Aeolian islands and the precious wealth of knowledge gained with the volcanological observatory and its stations. Etna, thanks to INGV, is one of the most monitored active volcanoes in the world".

“The collaboration with the Territory and Environment Department of the Sicilian Region and INGV is truly strategic for us", declares Massimo Chiappini, Director of the Environment Department of INGV, "our multidisciplinary techniques can characterize the entire Sicilian territory for sustainable environmental safety in the various sectors, marine and coastal. Let's think, for example, of the Etna area. It represents a unique operational scenario due to its peculiarity, being, in addition to being an active volcanic area, also a great treasure from an environmental point of view”, concludes Chiappini.
