Agreement signed with the Municipality and the Region to create a partnership to support Italy's candidacy to host the future gravitational wave observatory
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the Sardinia Region, and the Municipality of Nuoro are intensifying their scientific collaboration.Today, in the council chamber of the Barbagia capital, Mayor Emiliano Fenu, the President of the Region, Alessandra Todde, and the President of the INGV, Fabio Florindo, have signed the framework agreement with which they intend to promote the coordinated development of projects of high scientific value in the area., boosting research, advanced training, and the transfer of technology and know-how. This partnership is the result of the candidacy of the former Sos Enattos mining site to host the project "Einstein Telescope” and which, in addition to being functional to strengthening it, will bring high-level professional training opportunities to Nuoro. The Municipality will make the premises of the former Artiglieria available to the INGV, under redevelopment, which will thus become the site of a large scientific-university center.
"Today – states the President of the Sardinia Region, Alessandra Todde - We are culminating a week that will be crucial in our race to secure the Einstein Telescope project at the Sos Enattos site: on Monday, in Rome, we signed the declaration of intent with Saxony to undertake this journey together. Today, we are facing another momentous event for Nuoro and the Nuoro area, with the INGV's commitment to investing in higher education, making its technical and scientific knowledge available to the region. Here we are. – Todde underlines – When we talk about the positive impacts of ET, whether direct or indirect, that will change the face of Sardinia, we mean this too. The INGV's establishment in Nuoro means offering our students educational opportunities that were unimaginable until a few months ago, and at the same time, it means making the capital attractive for those who wish to specialize and deepen their studies in specific subjects. Not only scientific benefits, therefore, but also economic and social development.".
"This deal - Declares Mayor of the Municipality of Nuoro, Emiliano Fenu - This is the first concrete step in our administration's journey to transform the city of Nuoro into a scientific and research hub. Hosting the INGV, one of the world's leading research institutes in the field of geophysics and volcanology, is a major achievement for us, the fruit of joint political efforts between the Municipality of Nuoro and the Region of Sardinia. The former Artiglieria is the ideal location for the Institute, a place where research institutions will coexist side by side with the students of the university campus, in an area that returns to the city with its new role as a scientific hub for all of Sardinia. Enhancement of Nuoro's university and scientific potential is a cornerstone of our administrative action, which aims to restore the city to the central role it deserves, making it more attractive for those who want to invest in education and research.".
"I enthusiastically welcome the interest that the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the Municipality of Nuoro are showing with concrete actions to support the activities of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in the Sardinian territory - states the President of INGV, Fabio Florindo - We want to contribute to the Einstein Telescope's candidacy not only by continuing the observations begun in 2019, but also by strengthening the infrastructure and expanding our research in preparation for the site selection, which is now imminent. The support of the local government is essential in this final phase. The data collected in Sardinia, in a stable and quiet location, will be integrated into the INGV observational networks to improve our understanding of the evolution of the Mediterranean region and the active processes we observe in the Apennine chain and in Italian volcanoes. These data will also form the basis for deepening our knowledge of the geology of the Sardinian territory with a multidisciplinary approach.".
A steering committee will be established with the task of defining the programmatic themes covered by the agreementThe body will consist of a representative from the Region, one from the Municipality, and one from INGV, who will not receive remuneration for their work. The Committee will be able to draw on the support of employees of INGV, the Region, and the Municipality, as well as consultants with specific expertise in the identified topics and projects.
