For the next 5 years the two scientific bodies will collaborate to promote joint research and development initiatives

ROME, 6 NOVEMBER 2025 – The National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics – OGS and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology – INGV signed today in Rome the new framework agreement for scientific collaboration and activities of common interest to consolidate and develop cooperation between the two research institutions in the areas of Earth and Marine Sciences and Applied geophysics and Seismology and Seismology applied to engineering.

The agreement, signed by the President of the OGS Nicola Casagli and by the President of INGV Fabio Florindo, renews and strengthens the decades-long collaboration between the two organizations, formalized in 2011, and recognized as strategic for national scientific research and the Civil Protection system.

The new protocol, which will last five years, provides for the promotion of joint initiatives of research and development, the exchange of scientific data, the valorization of research resultsas well as the implementation of shared projects for the understanding and mitigation of natural risks, particularly seismic and geological ones.

To ensure effective coordination of activities, a joint committee composed of representatives from both institutions has been established. Its task is to direct joint activities and promote technical discussions dedicated to specific topics, from seismic and geodetic monitoring to subsurface monitoring and data sharing, up to the management and harmonization of observation networks.

“This agreement consolidates a historic and fundamental collaboration for the knowledge and security of our territory – declared Nicola Casagli, President of the OGS – the synergy between the OGS and the INGV allows us to systematize scientific expertise and strategic infrastructure to improve the understanding of seismic and tectonic processes in our country and thus contribute to the reduction of natural risks, first and foremost seismic risks”.

“We are very satisfied with the renewal of the collaboration agreement between INGV and OGS, which demonstrates how crucial a synergic approach is in civil protection activities for the safety of the national territory,” adds Fabio Florindo, President of INGV - This new commitment allows us to plan long-term activities to promote, develop, and enhance scientific research, with the aim of deepening our understanding of the natural risks affecting our country with a view to mitigating their effects on the most exposed citizens."

The agreement is part of the activities that see both institutions as centers of expertise of the Department of Civil Protection and as partners of European research infrastructures such as EPOS (European Plate Observing System) and EMSO (European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory).
