An earthquake measuring Md 2.6 (preliminary magnitude) was recorded by the Monitoring Network of the Vesuvius Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at 09:09 Italian time on 28 December 2020. The epicenter occurred in the area of Campi Flegrei (North-West of the city of Naples) at a depth of about 2,2 km.
Francesca Bianco, Director of the Vesuvius Observatory of INGV, highlighted: “The volcanic activity of Campi Flegrei is constantly monitored by the monitoring networks of the Vesuvius Observatory, in agreement with the Civil Protection Department. The geophysical and geochemical parameters analyzed indicate the persistence of the trends recorded in the previous months. At present there are no elements such as to suggest significant evolutions of the system in the short term, it being understood that a possible variation of the monitored parameters (seismological, geochemical and soil deformations) may lead to a different evolution of the hazard scenarios".
