Two days of informative events in the Sicilian capital to tell the scientific excellence of the first 25 years of the INGV
The next 5 and 6 FebruaryAt the 'Ecomuseum Sea Living Memory of Palermo, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) will continue the celebrations for the twenty-fifth anniversary of its establishment.
The event “INGV tells its story in Palermo”, organized in collaboration with theRegional School Office (USR) for Sicily, is part of the calendar of extraordinary events organized by INGV to tell the story of the Institute's research on Planet Earth and its activities that have always been at the service of society.
The aim of the two-day meetings is to reflect on the goals achieved and the future challenges for the Institute, but above all to involve visitors in the daily activities of the INGV related to its three main lines of research: Environment, Earthquakes and Volcanoes.
“We are thrilled to host the celebrations for the 25th anniversary of INGV in Palermo too”, says the Director of the Palermo Section of the Institute, Antonio Paonita. “Our Section boasts a long tradition in the study of Geochemistry, a discipline that cuts across the Earth Sciences, which has allowed us to combine, within a single event, the presentation to the public of the activities of all three Departments of our great Institution”.
Through informative seminars and guided tours, INGV staff will accompany the local community and secondary school students to discover the constant commitment and passion that drives the Institute's researchers to better understand our Planet.
“With this event we wish to strengthen our historical relationship with the territory and increase citizens’ awareness of the strategic role of Geosciences, in particular Fluid Geochemistry, for the understanding of natural phenomena”, points out Sergio Gurrieri, Research Director of INGV.
The event “INGV tells its story in Palermo” will be inaugurated on Wednesday 5 February with institutional greetings from the Director of the INGV Environment Department, Massimo Chiappini, and the interventions of:
- Carlo Doglioni, President of INGV;
- Hon. Gaetano Galvagno, President of the Sicilian Regional Assembly;
- Robert Lagalla, Mayor of Palermo;
- HE Mgr. Corrado Lorefice, Archbishop of Palermo;
- Hon. Alessandro Aricò, Councillor for Infrastructure and Mobility of the Sicilian Region;
- Prof. Massimo Midiri, Rector of the University of Palermo;
- Peter Alongi, Councilor for Environmental Policies and Ecological Transition of the Municipality of Palermo;
- Patricia Valenti, General Manager of the Department of the Environment, Department of Territory and Environment of the Sicilian Region;
- Salvatore Cocina, General Manager of the Civil Protection Department of the Sicilian Region;
- Marco Ring, Deputy Director of the Regional School Office for Sicily;
- Francesco Venerating Mantegna, General Director of Environmental Monitoring and Strategic Innovative Research.
Following, a series of scientific seminars dedicated to mission of the Institute, to the exploration of the deep sea, to the geology of earthquakes and tsunamis, and to the impact of space weather on our everyday activities.
Exhibit, interactive workshops, educational activities, games and demonstrations of the most modern scientific technologies will also help visitors to experience natural phenomena first-hand.
Thursday 6 February will be dedicated to schools: the President of the INGV and the Deputy Director of the USR Sicily will welcome the young students for a morning dedicated to climate change, the Mediterranean, the role of science in understanding natural phenomena and much more, which will end with the Award ceremony of the competition “Planet Earth. Now!” sponsored by INGV and URS Sicilia to raise awareness among secondary school students on environmental issues.
During the two days, it will also be possible to visit the photographic exhibition “The Land of the Poor Christians. The 1968 Earthquake in Belice”, curated by INGV in collaboration with theAcademy of Fine Arts of Palermo, and the permanent exhibition of the Ecomuseum Mare Memoria Viva.
There is a special philatelic cancellation curated by Poste Italiane on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the INGV.
